Blonde hair, blue eyes, American Alpine Skier Lindsey Vonn proves to be one of the best in her race. Lindsey started skating at the age of two in St. Paul, Minn. Even at such a young age, Vonn showed much talent. Later in life, Vonn became the first U.S. female to win the Trofew Topollino youth competition in Italy. Vonn then went on to win three Junior World Champtionship medals and two U.S titles as a teenager. At the age of ten, Lindsey was introduced to her idol, Picabo Steet. From then on, Lindsey dreamed of being an Olympian.
At the age of 17, Vonn made her first Olympics appearance in the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter games. After her first Olympic debut, Vonn continued to soar. Since then, Vonn has won two overall World Cup titles in 2008 and 2009 and 25 World Cup victories before this years Olympics. Vonn was expected to be a top contender in the 2006 Torino Games but suffered a terrible crash during downhill training which left her with injuries that could be career threatening. Vonn did not care, she competed in the games anyways and endured the pain. Due to her injuries, the highest Vonn placed was seventh, but earned the women’s U.S. Olympic Spirit award for her courage. While preparing for this years Olympic games, Vonn once again became injured. This time during a practice run in Austria. With little preparation time, Vonn feared her chances to compete in Vancouver seeing as she has not practiced since February 2. Due to weather, Vonns events were pushed back which gave her more time to heal.
Time prevailed and Lindsey Vonn began her Olympic practice rounds on Monday, finishing 1st with the time of 1:30:75. In her second Downhill training run, Vonn was ranked 20th with a time of 18:52 on Tuesday. Finally, the big race. With a time of 1:44:19 Vonn brought home the Gold medal in Downhill Alpine Skiing! Vonn has one race left to compete in on Thursday, the Super- Combined Downhill. Tune in to watch this great American athlete compete for her second gold medal in the 2009 Winter Games!
