Today's African American role models

I believe there are many African American role models in history.

Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Oprah Winfrey, and Tyra Banks are just a few I could think of. Every one of these people contributed to the changes we experienced throughout history.

Harriet Tubman, born a slave in 1820, led over 300 slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad. Without her, who knows where slavery would have been at today. Her role in helping out slaves inspired another woman to stand up for what she believed in.

December 1, 1955 is the day Rosa Parks refused to give her seat up on the bus to a white passenger. The police arrested Parks but this began the movement that ended legal segregation in America. This woman's outstanding courage led to the most famous speech by the man who got named "Man of the Year" in 1963 by Time magazine.

Martin Luther King is known for his "I Have a Dream" speech. He is the most inspirational man that many people aspire to be like.

The third Monday of January is the day that we celebrate and honor this world figure in his fight for racial equality.

Now, for the girl version of Martin Luther King we look to a woman who never gave a famous speech but does everything else.

Philanthropist, producer, and actress are only three of many words to describe this inspirational African American role Model.

Oprah Winfrey does whatever she can to help others and make sure they are living the best life they can live. She was named one of the 100 Most Influential People of the 20th Century by Time magazine and became the first African American Woman to become a billionaire in 2003.

Following in Winfrey's footsteps is the host of the famous show we all know, "Americas Next Top Model."

Tyra Banks is a role model for women of all ages all over the world. This "Woman of the Year" does everything from modeling to hosting her own television show to owning her own company all at the young age of 35.

Tyra stresses the importance of inner beauty and teaches men and women how to love themselves and how to reach their dreams. One of the men that made an appearance on Banks' show is a man we will soon all get to know very well.

Change can happen. This is the statement President Barack Obama promises the nation. Being the first African American president, he will surely go down in history as one of the most inspirational men. Whether you voted for him or not you know he led the most memorable inauguration (and not just because he forgot the words while being sworn in.)

We need to look at each one of these people as inspiration and aspire to be like them. Who wouldn't want to stand up for what they believe in, have their own holiday or be the president of America?
